About Us...
MISSION
Our ultimate mission is to make our students more successful in life. We do this by teaching our karate as a complete discipline (mind, body, spirit), which in addition to developing physical defense encourages the formation of high personal standards and respect for fellow men and women. Not only do students become black belts in martial arts, but they strive to become academic black belts and eventually, corporate black belts or black belt employees. We use "black belt" as a metaphor for personal excellence.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
At Olympic Karate we build our students from the inside out. We combine ancient Eastern philosophies with modern Western teaching techniques to enable our students to focus on achieving worthwhile goals and to meet life's challenges with total confidence. We believe self-esteem is the key. When a person values his or her self then he or she has motive to improve. Our experience has enabled our instructors to be martial arts coaches and mentors, and less like authoritarian drill sergeants to be feared. The results are very rewarding for our students, parents, and instructors.
OUR SYSTEM
Our system, Modern Goju (Hard/Soft) is based on the same philosophy as Yin[Yangthat is our opposites give us harmony in the universe. It is designed to provide a smooth, gradual, and steady progression in both physical and mental growth. The belt structure provides a goal system for students to work towards. We have 9 levels of progression: White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Red, Brown, 2nd Brown. The lower level belts are short-term goals and concentrate mostly on mental development. As you gain knowledge you will also gain confidence in your ability to achieve your goals. Gradually, you will learn to set longer term and more difficult goals. As you progress your knowledge and skill will increase as well as your capacity to learn and concentrate. This requires a strong, fit body, achievable through consistent class attendance and regular practice.
As you advance through the levels, you will prove to yourself that you are capable and fit to wear the Black Belt. You will also build a solid personal character and a positive attitude toward life. In the end you will have gained skill, knowledge, confidence, discipline, and an increased level of concentration.
